MSMEs Are the Backbone of Our Economy – PS Subeta Mutelo

Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Subeta Mutelo, has reaffirmed the critical role of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in powering innovation, sustainable development, and job creation in Zambia.

Speaking during the ZANACO Business Clinic held in Kitwe to mark UN-SME Day, Mrs. Mutelo said MSMEs account for over 90% of businesses in Zambia, serving as key drivers of inclusive growth and economic resilience.

“The 2025 theme challenges us to reflect and act. MSMEs not only sustain livelihoods but also pioneer community-driven innovations and scalable solutions,” she said.

Mrs. Mutelo highlighted Government initiatives to strengthen the MSME sector, including formalization of informal businesses, access to affordable finance, industrial yard development, and entrepreneurship training.

She praised ZANACO as a vital partner in advancing enterprise development, noting its role in providing tailored financial products, digital tools, and mentorship.

ZANACO Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. Chali Mwefyeni, echoed the sentiment, reaffirming the bank’s commitment to empowering entrepreneurs through expanded access to resources, training, and market opportunities.

The event united entrepreneurs, government officials, and industry players, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange to propel MSME growth nationwide.
