ZMA Rolls Out New Certification System for Prepackaged Commodities

The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has unveiled a new certification system for prepackaged goods, marking a major step toward strengthening quality assurance and regulatory oversight in Zambia’s manufacturing and agricultural sectors.

Speaking at a workshop attended by key players from the seed and fertilizer industries, ZMA Executive Director Mr. Humphrey Nkobeni introduced the system, highlighting its foundation in the Metrology Act No. 6 of 2017.

The event aimed to raise awareness of the new framework while fostering dialogue and collaboration between stakeholders.

“Your presence here signifies a shared commitment to enhancing trust, fairness and quality assurance in the manufacturing, marketing and sale of prepackaged goods across Zambia,” said Mr. Nkobeni, adding that the initiative extends beyond enforcement to offer continuous support throughout the production chain.

Mr. Nkobeni emphasized that the agricultural and manufacturing sectors—pillars of Zambia’s economy and food security—deserve systems that empower both consumers and industry players. The certification is expected to boost consumer confidence, reduce complaints, promote fair trade, and align Zambian products with international standards.

He encouraged participants to see the workshop as a platform for dialogue, stating, “We are here to listen, to learn and to refine the system with your valuable input.”

ZMA pledged ongoing support through clear guidelines, technical training, and open engagement to ensure measurement accuracy and packaging integrity across the board.
