Gov’t Refutes Authorization of Mining at Senseli Mine, Vows Crackdown on Illegal Activities
Zambian government has strongly denied authorizing any mining operations at Senseli Mine in Chingola, asserting its unwavering commitment to lawful and regulated mining practices.
Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Hon. Paul Kabuswe, made the clarification in response to circulating reports alleging official approval of mining at the site.
He emphasized that Senseli Mine remains a private venture and that the government is actively engaging its owners to formalize operations in line with Zambia’s mining laws.
“The government does not condone illegal mining,” said Hon. Kabuswe. “We are in discussions with the owners of Senseli Mine to ensure their operations are compliant with legal and safety standards.”
The Minister added that security wings are working closely with the Ministry to support a smooth and orderly regularization process.
He also addressed the recent visit to Senseli Mine by Chingola Member of Parliament, Hon. Chipoka Mulenga, clarifying that the visit was not an endorsement of unauthorized mining, but rather an effort to educate local miners on the importance of operating within the law.
In a related development, the Minister announced that all illegal miners who had encroached on Konkola Copper Mines’ (KCM) Nchanga Mine were ordered to vacate the premises last Saturday.
The move highlights the government’s zero-tolerance stance on unlawful mining activities. Security forces have since been deployed to enforce compliance and maintain order at the site.
“The Ministry is committed to fostering a transparent, secure, and sustainable mining environment that safeguards communities and upholds environmental standards,” added Hon. Kabuswe.
The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, through its Public Relations Unit, assured stakeholders that it remains vigilant in protecting the integrity of Zambia’s mining sector.
