Caritas Zambia Urges Renewed National Commitment on World Refugee Day 2025

On this year’s World Refugee Day, observed on June 20th, Caritas Zambia has issued a heartfelt appeal for stronger solidarity with refugees, calling for collective action rooted in faith and humanity.

Under the theme “Solidarity with Refugees – Ubuntu in Action,” the Catholic organization emphasized the need to protect the rights and dignity of those forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, and violence.

In a statement released by Caritas Zambia Executive Director, Fr. Dr. Gabriel Mapulanga, the organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting refugees in Zambia, especially children and youth.

“We are reminded that Jesus Himself was once a refugee,” said Fr. Mapulanga, referencing biblical teachings that underpin the Catholic Church’s call for compassion and hospitality.

He noted that from Scripture to Catholic Social Teaching, faith consistently calls people to welcome the stranger and walk in solidarity with the suffering.

Caritas Zambia highlighted its ongoing work in empowering young refugees with livelihood skills and providing psychosocial support to help them cope with trauma. However, the organization stressed that humanitarian efforts must be matched by concrete legal and policy commitments.

It called on the Zambian government to implement its 2024 Refugee Policy effectively, harmonize conflicting laws, and improve coordination among relevant departments under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security.

“We cannot do this alone,” Fr. Mapulanga stated. “Addressing the challenges faced by refugees requires collaboration between government agencies, civil society, and communities.”

He praised the Zambian Government’s history of hospitality and called for renewed dedication to strengthening protections and investing in refugee self-reliance.

Caritas Zambia concluded its message with a powerful reminder: every refugee carries not only a past of hardship but also a future filled with potential. Investing in their well-being, the organization affirmed, is not just an act of charity—but a contribution to national development and human dignity.
