Over K15M Disbursed to Support Vulnerable Girls’ Education in Zambia

The Ministry of Education’s Keeping Girls in School and Beyond (KGS) Initiative has disbursed over K15 million to cover applicable school fees for beneficiaries in Term One of 2025.

The funding supports 20,092 girls eligible for secondary school fees across 93 districts in all 10 provinces.

The fees covered include full or weekly boarding fees, tuition, examination fees for external and GCE candidates, and additional tuition for grant-aided schools. These fall outside the “Education for All” policy categories, ensuring vulnerable girls from Social Cash Transfer (SCT) households receive crucial financial support.

The KGS Initiative operates under the Girls Education and Women Empowerment and Livelihood for Human Capital (GEWEL 2.0) Project, funded by the World Bank and complemented by a Multi-Donor Trust Fund.

It is part of an innovative “Cash Plus” social protection design aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty by enhancing education outcomes among poor and vulnerable girls.

KGS Project Coordinator Mr. Willie Kaputo shared the update during a recent briefing in Lusaka.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Administration Ms. Noriana Muneku encouraged all KGS learners to make the most of this opportunity, urging them to complete their secondary education and advance to tertiary studies, which are offered free for all KGS beneficiaries.

Ms. Muneku also advised beneficiary girls to avoid negative influences such as early marriages and teenage pregnancies, emphasizing the importance of education in transforming their futures.
