Zambia Reaffirms Commitment to Child Welfare on Day of the African Child 2025
Zambia has joined the rest of the continent in commemorating the Day of the African Child, renewing its pledge to protect, empower, and uplift every Zambian child.
The event, held in Ndola, Copperbelt Province, was officiated by Provincial Minister Mr. Elisha Matambo and drew participation from government officials, civil society, and child representatives.
In his keynote address, Mr. Matambo stressed the urgency of creating a safe, nurturing environment where children can thrive free from violence and rights violations.
He noted Zambia’s progress in child protection, citing the ratification of international treaties, the enactment of the Children’s Code Act No. 12 of 2022, and operational structures like the Victim Support and Child Protection Units under the Zambia Police Service.
Also speaking at the event, Mr. Gerald Tembo, Assistant Director for Child Development in the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, strongly condemned the abuse of children in illicit activities, particularly drug trafficking.
He urged young people to reject such exploitation and embrace opportunities aimed at safeguarding their development and leadership potential.
“We are aware of children being used by irresponsible adults in drug-related activities. This government will not watch from the sidelines. Say no to being used for illegal purposes,” Mr. Tembo said.
Children’s representative Ricky Mulala used the occasion to advocate for child-centered, inclusive, and sustainable policies, while calling for more platforms that allow children to voice their concerns.
This year’s commemoration also served to honor the memory of the children killed during the 1976 Soweto uprising in South Africa, whose courageous stand against apartheid-era education policies led to the official recognition of the Day of the African Child in 1991.
Organizations including UNICEF Zambia, Save the Children Zambia, and Children International Zambia were also present to support the call for stronger child welfare systems and inclusive development.
The event reaffirmed Zambia’s collective commitment to ensuring every child has access to quality education, healthcare, and protection in line with national and continental aspirations.
