Zambia Thanks South Africa for Support Following Former President Lungu’s Death
The Zambian Government has expressed deep gratitude to the Republic of South Africa for its unwavering support following the passing of former Zambian President, His Excellency Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who died on June 5, 2025, in a South African hospital.
In a press statement released today, Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., MP, extended special thanks on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Hon. Haimbe praised South Africa’s government, particularly the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), for their hospitality, solidarity, and close collaboration during this period of national mourning.
“The unwavering support provided by the Government of South Africa to the Zambian delegation, the bereaved family, and all mourners has been deeply comforting,” stated Hon. Haimbe.
He announced that the late President Lungu’s remains will be repatriated to Zambia on June 18, 2025, and noted that Zambia will formally request full military honours from South Africa in recognition of Dr. Lungu’s status and contributions.
Hon. Haimbe also emphasized the enduring bilateral ties between Zambia and South Africa, adding that this moment of collaboration reflects the strength and depth of friendship between the two nations.
Additionally, the Zambian Government conveyed condolences to South Africa over the recent floods that have claimed lives and caused extensive damage. President Hichilema’s message of sympathy was delivered to President Ramaphosa through Hon. Haimbe.
