Zambia Signs $40M Solar Pact Under Presidential Initiative
The Government of Zambia has formalized a $40 million partnership to deploy 50 megawatts (MW) of solar power across 209 public institutions in Eastern Province.
The project is part of the Presidential Solar Initiative, a key programme led by President Hakainde Hichilema aimed at adding 1,000MW of solar energy to the national grid by 2025.
The agreement was signed between local firm Accura Logistics and international investor Baker Global Capital Africa, marking a significant stride in public-private energy collaboration.
Speaking at the ceremony in Lusaka, Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote hailed the deal as evidence of Zambia’s growing appeal to international investors, citing the government’s strong leadership and policy reforms under the New Dawn Administration.
He said the solar installations will power schools, clinics, and other essential institutions, boosting community development and service delivery in underserved areas.
“We are moving from rhetoric to results,” said Mr. Chikote. “This project reflects our commitment to practical progress and our resolve to light up every corner of Zambia with sustainable energy.”
Douglas Baker, Founder of Baker Global Capital Africa, praised the initiative’s long-term vision and committed his firm to delivering reliable solar solutions that directly benefit Zambian communities.
Meanwhile, Accura Logistics CEO Chola Katai thanked the government for creating an environment where Zambian companies can thrive and play a meaningful role in national development.
Minister Chikote concluded by inviting more private and development partners to explore opportunities in Zambia’s renewable energy sector, reaffirming that the country is open for sustainable and inclusive business.
