Children’s Code Act in Spotlight as Zambia Pushes for Greater Investment in Youth
The Zambian Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to advancing children’s welfare as a fundamental pillar of national development.
Speaking at the official opening of the National Children’s Symposium 2025 in Ndola, themed “Planning and Budgeting for Children’s Rights: Progress Since 2010”, Kitwe District Commissioner Mr. Oncemore Ngonongo emphasized the importance of child participation in decision-making processes.
“Children must not only be seen but heard. Their voices must shape the policies and budgets that directly impact their future,” Mr. Ngonongo stated, adding that safeguarding children’s rights is a legal and moral duty requiring transparent investment and inclusive governance.
He cited the Children’s Code Act No. 12 of 2022 as a milestone in protecting the rights of children in Zambia and called for increased funding towards education, healthcare, nutrition, and protection services.
Chief Child Development Officer at the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Mr. Gerald Tembo, urged participants to understand the responsibilities tied to the Children’s Code Act, reminding them that the law upholds the role of parents and the duty of children to respect guidance at home.
The symposium drew participants from all ten districts of the Copperbelt Province, including learners, government officials, UNICEF Zambia, SOS Children’s Villages – Zambia, Kids Alive International, and Save the Children Zambia.
It provided a platform to evaluate progress made in budgeting for children since 2010, aligning with this year’s Day of the African Child commemoration.
