African Union Envoys Honour Late Zambian President Edgar Lungu

A wave of diplomatic condolences continues to flow at the Embassy of the Republic of Zambia in Addis Ababa, where African ambassadors accredited to the African Union are signing a Book of Condolences in honor of the late former President of Zambia, H.E. Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who passed away last week in South Africa.

Former President Lungu, who led Zambia from 2015 to 2021, is being remembered across the continent for his contributions to peace, development, and regional cooperation. His passing has sparked tributes from African leaders and diplomats, many of whom are acknowledging his impact not just in Zambia, but across the African continent.

Among the diplomats who visited the Zambian Embassy was Namibian Ambassador to Ethiopia, H.E. Mr. Mbapeua Muvangua, who described the late leader’s death as a “profound loss” to Africa.

He highlighted the historic bond between Namibia and Zambia, recalling Zambia’s unwavering support during Namibia’s liberation struggle—a gesture the Namibian people continue to honor and cherish.

Mozambique’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, H.E. Ana Nemba, praised Lungu’s legacy, pointing to his active role in promoting peace and development in the region. She commended his leadership within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), noting that his work had reinforced Zambia’s position as a regional leader.

“This is a moment for unity among Zambians,” she said, “as they reflect on a life of service and statesmanship.”

Mrs. Diana Nkomba Jere, Chargé d’Affaires at the Malawian Embassy in Ethiopia, also conveyed condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Malawi, offering heartfelt sympathy to the Zambian nation.

The ambassadors were welcomed at the Zambian Embassy by Mr. Tom Michelo, Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Zambia to Ethiopia, who thanked them for their solidarity during this time of mourning.

The Zambian mission in Addis Ababa continues to receive messages of sympathy and support from the diplomatic community and African institutions, reflecting former President Lungu’s enduring influence on continental unity and cooperation.
