President Lungu Deserves a Dignified Send-Off – Economist Chisanga Pays Tribute

Prominent Zambian economic analyst Kelvin Chisanga has paid tribute to the late Sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, describing him as a key transitional leader whose legacy deserves national honor and a state funeral.

President Lungu passed away on June 5, 2025, at Mediclinic Medforum Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, where he had been receiving specialized medical care. His death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from across Zambia and beyond.

Mr. Chisanga reflected on Lungu’s presidency, which he said spanned one of the country’s most demanding periods. “Former President Lungu served Zambia during one of its most difficult transitional eras. While no leader is perfect—he too had flaws—he demonstrated notable strength and commitment to the nation,” Chisanga said.

He emphasized Lungu’s role in sustaining key development programs, especially in agriculture and infrastructure, following the sudden death of President Michael Sata in 2014.

“Under Sata, Zambia had launched bold projects like the Link 8000 road initiative, bridge construction, and sectoral development in health and agriculture. President Lungu ensured these projects didn’t lose momentum,” Chisanga noted.

He highlighted Lungu’s support for aggressive agricultural policies and infrastructure expansion, which contributed to Zambia’s food security. “Despite the usual imbalances that come with governance, President Lungu ensured the country maintained adequate food reserves—critical during tough times like the recent drought,” he said.

Recalling his personal interactions with the late leader, Chisanga described Lungu’s leadership as inclusive and consultative. “I was frequently contacted by the Office of the President to contribute to policy debates, especially on economic matters before Parliament. That openness to dialogue was one of his strengths,” he stated.

However, Chisanga acknowledged that Lungu’s administration faced challenges, including political interference. “One key weakness was the unchecked influence of political cadres, which many believe contributed to the ruling party’s eventual decline in popularity,” he added.

Still, Chisanga asserted that Lungu made consequential decisions in a complex domestic and global economic climate. Even after leaving office in 2021, he remained an influential figure, recently returning to active politics before his death.

“In light of his contributions and the high office he once held, President Lungu deserves a state funeral. He led with dedication during a turbulent time and leaves behind a legacy worth honoring with dignity,” Chisanga concluded.
