Zambia Mourns the Passing of Former President Dr. Lungu

Zambia mourns the loss of its sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who passed away on 5th June, 2025, at Mediclinic Medforum Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, where he had been receiving specialized medical treatment.

The news was confirmed by Chawama Member of Parliament and daughter to the late President, Hon. Tasila Lungu-Mwansa, as well as the family’s legal representative, Hon. Makebi Zulu. 

According to Hon. Zulu, the family is currently informing close relatives and friends of the tragic development.

Dr. Lungu served as Zambia’s Head of State from January 26, 2015, until August 24, 2021, leading the country through a period marked by both economic challenges and infrastructure expansion. 

His presidency followed that of the late Michael Sata, under whom he also served in various ministerial positions including Minister of Justice and Defence.

Acting Patriotic Front President Hon. Given Lubinda issued the official statement on behalf of the party, noting that funeral arrangements and further details will be announced in due course.

The nation is expected to enter a period of national mourning to honour the former leader’s legacy and service to the Republic.
