Zambia Reaffirms Global Tourism Leadership at UN Executive Council Session in Spain

Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to global tourism leadership, as Honourable Rodney Sikumba, MP and Minister of Tourism, leads the nation’s delegation at the 123rd Session of the UN Tourism Executive Council, held in Segovia, Spain, from May 28 to 30, 2025.

Upon arrival, Hon. Sikumba emphasized the importance of Zambia’s presence at the high-level meeting, stating: “Zambia’s presence at this crucial session reaffirms our commitment to advancing sustainable tourism both at home and globally. As a member of the Executive Council, we are not only contributing to strategic decisions but also positioning Zambia as an active partner in shaping the future of international tourism. We are here to advocate for inclusive growth, innovation and resilience across the sector.”

The UN Tourism Executive Council, which convenes twice a year, plays a critical role in overseeing the organization’s strategic direction and budget implementation. Zambia currently holds a seat on the Council, giving it a voice in key global decisions impacting the tourism sector.

This 123rd session carries special weight as it includes deliberations to recommend a new Secretary-General of UN Tourism for the 2026–2029 term. Five candidates—representing Ghana, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Mexico, and Greece—are in contention. The Council’s recommendation will later be presented to the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly for final approval.

Hon. Sikumba is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising Ms. Judith Mulenga, Zambia’s Ambassador to France and Permanent Delegate Designate to UN Tourism; Dr. Andrew K. Chilufya, Director of Tourism at the Ministry of Tourism; and Ms. Twaambo Muzyamba, First Secretary – Tourism and Zambia’s Focal Point to UN Tourism.
