Zambia Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Cities at UN Habitat Assembly in Nairobi

Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive and sustainable urban development as it actively participates in the Resumed Second Session of the United Nations Habitat Assembly, being held from 29–30 May 2025 at the UN-Habitat Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Zambian delegation is led by the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Eng. Hon. Charles Milupi, MP, and the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Gift Sialubalo, MP.

Themed “A sustainable urban future through inclusive and effective multilateralism: achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in times of global crises,” the Assembly brings together high-level global leaders to shape the future of urban policy.

At the heart of this year’s deliberations is housing—emphasizing “Adequate Housing for All” as a key driver for resilient, inclusive, and climate-proof cities. Discussions also cover multi-level governance, urban-rural linkages, and financing infrastructure development to improve service delivery and human settlements.

Speaking in Nairobi, Eng. Milupi stressed Zambia’s dedication to the New Urban Agenda and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 11, which targets safe, resilient, and sustainable cities.

“Zambia remains steadfast in addressing urbanization challenges and upgrading informal settlements through strategic multilateral cooperation,” he said.

The forum also provides an opportunity for Zambia to share its SDG progress and explore global partnerships to advance its urban development agenda.

The ministers are expected to attend key plenary sessions, side events, and bilateral meetings focused on sustainable infrastructure, housing delivery, and climate adaptation strategies.
