Merck Foundation Celebrates World Art Day 2025 by Empowering African Artists to Drive Social Change
The Merck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, marked World Art Day 2025 by spotlighting its impactful Film, Song, Media, and Fashion Awards in partnership with Africa’s First Ladies.
Led by CEO Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, the foundation continues to harness the power of art and creativity to tackle pressing health and social issues across the continent.
Dr. Kelej, listed among the 100 Most Influential Africans for six consecutive years, emphasized the transformative role of art in advocacy:
“Art, fashion, and media are not just expressions—they are tools for education, advocacy, and changing cultural norms,” she said.
As part of its Art and Fashion with Purpose community, Merck Foundation has launched several initiatives including Our Africa by Merck Foundation, a pan-African TV program produced and co-hosted by Dr. Kelej. The show features African artists and experts who explore themes such as infertility stigma, gender-based violence, girl education, and health awareness.
The Foundation also announced the 2025 editions of its eight major awards at the 11th Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary held in Tanzania. The awards recognize outstanding contributions by media, fashion designers, filmmakers, and musicians who address issues such as diabetes, hypertension, child marriage, and women’s empowerment.
In collaboration with African First Ladies, the Foundation has produced over 30 multilingual songs, 8 children’s storybooks, and animated films to promote health and social equity at the grassroots level.
