FAWEZA Calls for Unified Action on Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025
The Forum for African Women Educationalists of Zambia (FAWEZA) joined the global community in commemorating Menstrual Hygiene Day today, May 28, 2025, under the theme “Together for a Period-Friendly World.”
In a press statement, Executive Director Mr. Costern Kanchele emphasized the need to break menstrual taboos and promote dignity and equality for all girls and women.
Mr. Kanchele commended the Zambian government for its commitment to menstrual health through initiatives like the provision of free sanitary pads to schoolgirls, particularly in rural areas. He noted that such efforts have improved school attendance and confidence among adolescent girls.
FAWEZA continues to support national efforts by offering menstrual health education, distributing sanitary products, and training girls in the production of reusable pads—a step toward both sustainability and empowerment.
However, Mr. Kanchele stressed that creating a period-friendly world goes beyond providing hygiene products. “It requires a shift in social attitudes and shared responsibility among schools, families, civil society, and policymakers,” he said.
FAWEZA called for more inclusive menstrual education for all learners, open family discussions, community support systems, and increased investment in menstrual health infrastructure and services.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to building a society where menstruation is not a barrier to education, dignity, or opportunity.
