ERB Approves 45 Energy Licences Worth K1.36 Billion, Boosting Zambia’s Energy Sector
The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has approved 45 energy licences and 10 construction permits across Zambia’s petroleum, electricity, and renewable energy sub-sectors, unlocking a total investment pledge of K1.36 billion (approximately US$49 million).
According to ERB Manager – Public Relations, Namukolo Kasumpa, the approvals, made during the ERB Licensing Committee meeting held on 16th May, reflect Zambia’s continued attractiveness to energy investors and the regulatory board’s commitment to streamlining licensing processes.
“These approvals demonstrate ERB’s resolve to enhance energy availability and efficiency, while facilitating timely project implementation,” Kasumpa stated.
The newly approved licences cover diverse operations, including renewable energy generation, petroleum product distribution, electricity trading, LPG retail, and lubricant-related services.
A highlight of the approvals is Phase 2 of a 100 MWp Solar PV Plant project in Kanona, Serenje District, to be developed in four phases of 25 MWp each, with a total investment value of US$27.5 million.
To bolster petroleum logistics, the ERB also licensed 114 road tank vehicles and authorised operations of three newly constructed service stations.
Kasumpa reaffirmed the ERB’s commitment to regulating the energy sector transparently while fostering a reliable and inclusive energy mix aligned with Zambia’s sustainable development goals.
