Airtel Zambia Unveils AI-Powered Spam Alert Service to Combat Mobile Fraud
Airtel Networks Zambia Plc, the country’s largest telecommunications provider, has launched a cutting-edge AI-powered Spam Alert Service aimed at shielding its over 11 million customers from mobile fraud and unsolicited SMS communications.
The innovative service, which is automatically activated and available at no cost to all Airtel subscribers, provides real-time alerts for suspected spam text messages—eliminating the need for app downloads and offering protection to both smartphone and feature phone users.
Gracing the launch event, Honourable Felix Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, lauded the initiative as “a timely and strategic response to cyber threats,” citing its alignment with Zambia’s 8th National Development Plan and the Cyber Security Act.
“This service not only enhances consumer protection but also supports Government’s broader agenda of digital transformation and inclusive access to secure ICT services,” the Minister said.
Airtel Zambia Managing Director, Mr. Hussam Baday, emphasized the company’s commitment to technological innovation, noting that the AI Spam Alert Service is the first of its kind in Zambia. “With the new AI-powered spam alert, we are enabling our customers to be more vigilant to fraud attempts and to have a better experience of our services,” he stated.
He added, “As digital adoption increases, so does the threat landscape. At Airtel, we are not just focused on connectivity—we are focused on security and trust.”
Also present at the launch, Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) Director General Eng. Collins Mbulo commended the move, saying, “This spam alert system is an excellent example of how innovation can be used to enhance public trust in digital services. It supports our mandate to promote the responsible use of ICTs and strengthens our national cybersecurity posture.”
