Zambia and Czech Republic Unite to Celebrate Legacy of Explorer Dr. Emil Holub
The Ministry of Tourism of Zambia and the Czech Republic have officially launched a joint exhibition titled “Dr. Emil Holub: Discoveries of the Legendary Czech Explorer in the 19th Century.” The exhibition opened today at the Livingstone Museum and marks a significant milestone in Zambia-Czech cultural cooperation.
The event honours the remarkable legacy of Dr. Emil Holub, a renowned Czech explorer, ethnographer, and natural scientist whose expeditions in the 1800s significantly enriched the global understanding of Africa’s cultural and natural landscapes—many of his explorations took place in present-day Zambia.
The ceremony was graced by high-level dignitaries, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health of the Czech Republic, Mr. Vlastimil Válek, who praised the initiative as a beacon of cultural unity.
“This exhibition reflects the deep respect our nations have for shared history and heritage. It is through such partnerships that we preserve the richness of our past for future generations,” said Mr. Válek.
Zambia’s Southern Province Minister, Honourable Credo Nanjuwa, echoed this sentiment, stating that the exhibition offers not only historical education but also a platform for cultural exchange and mutual appreciation.
Also present were Evans Muhanga, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism; Dr. Michal Lukeš, Director of the Czech National Museum; District Commissioner Ms. Eunice Nawa; and the Mayor of Livingstone, Ms. Constance Muleabai, among other dignitaries.
The exhibition highlights Holub’s extensive travels, his scientific documentation, and his respectful engagement with local communities. It serves as a bridge connecting historical narratives with modern-day heritage preservation efforts.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the exhibition stands as a testament to international collaboration and is part of a broader commitment to promote educational exchange and museum cooperation.
Citizens and visitors alike are encouraged to visit the Livingstone Museum to explore this unique window into Zambia’s historical ties with Europe.
