Gov’t Committed to Boosting Tourism as Key Economic Driver — Minister Sikumba

Zambia’s Minister of Tourism, Rodney Sikumba, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to positioning the tourism sector as a cornerstone of the nation’s economic development.

Speaking on the side-lines of the ongoing Africa Travel Indaba in Durban, South Africa, Mr. Sikumba emphasized the need for collaboration among Zambian stakeholders to promote the country as a top-tier destination for tourism and foreign investment.

“The Africa Travel Indaba is a major platform for us,” he said. “It allows buyers and investors already within the continent to experience Zambia’s unmatched hospitality, diverse wildlife, and emerging business opportunities.”

The Minister noted that this year’s event has seen a significant presence of Zambian private-sector players, a development he described as a strong indicator of growing confidence in the country’s tourism potential.

“The private-sector participation is key. This event brings together tourism exhibitors from across the world, and it’s important that Zambia has a strong voice in that conversation,” Mr. Sikumba added.

Highlighting Zambia’s unique appeal, he said the country continues to attract global tourists through its rich natural heritage, cultural experiences, and iconic landmarks like the Victoria Falls.

He also noted that Zambia offers a favourable environment for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) beyond tourism, citing agriculture, energy, and infrastructure.

Mr. Sikumba stressed that the long-term growth of the tourism sector would require robust infrastructure development, improved air connectivity, and a skilled workforce. “We’re working tirelessly to ensure these elements are in place. Our vision is to create an ecosystem that supports sustainable tourism while enhancing economic growth,” he said.

He invited global tourism enthusiasts and investors to attend the Zambia Travel Expo (ZATEX) scheduled for June 5, 2025, in Livingstone. He said the expo would serve as a premier platform for networking, innovation, and unlocking new opportunities in the tourism sector.

As part of his official engagements, Mr. Sikumba toured various Zambian exhibition stands at the Indaba and applauded the private sector for showcasing the country’s diverse tourism offerings.

He urged stakeholders to continue forming meaningful connections with global industry players to further elevate Zambia’s tourism profile.

Mr. Sikumba is leading Zambia’s delegation to the Africa Travel Indaba, one of the continent’s leading annual travel trade shows. The event gathers tourism professionals, buyers, media, and exhibitors from around the world, serving as a vital networking and marketing platform for Africa’s tourism industry.

During the event, the Zambian Minister met with South Africa’s Deputy President, Mr. Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile, who commended Zambia for its strides in developing the tourism industry.

Mr. Mashatile also visited the Zambian stand shortly after the official opening of the Indaba, signalling support and goodwill between the two nations.
