Mulungushi University Hosts Landmark Summit on Generative AI in Higher Education
Mulungushi University, in collaboration with the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) Zambia Centre and the UNESCO International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (UNESCO ICHEI), has successfully held a summit on Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) in higher education.
The summit, which took place at the main campus in Kapiri Mposhi, marked a significant step in integrating AI into Zambia’s educational landscape.
In his keynote address, Honourable Douglas Syakalima, Minister of Education, emphasized the transformative potential of Generative AI in education. He highlighted the vast opportunities AI presents, such as personalized learning pathways, advanced data analytics for research, and the automation of routine tasks, all aimed at enhancing access, quality, and relevance in higher education.
“Generative AI, when properly handled, offers immense promise for enhancing access, quality, and relevance in higher education,” Hon. Syakalima stated. “However, we must also address concerns around ethics, equity, and governance as we navigate this transformative technology.”
The summit brought together universities, technology providers, and international organizations to discuss the role of AI in revolutionizing pedagogy and assessment. Key discussions centered around best practices for integrating AI tools across curricula and building institutional capacity to ensure that both educators and students are prepared for the digital future.
A highlight of the summit was a presentation by Dazzle View, represented by Ms. Shirley Kong, who donated AI-enabled screens designed to transform digital classrooms. The event also saw active participation from UNESCO representatives, including Ms. Bi Xiaohan and Mr. Cao Zian, who stressed the importance of international collaboration in advancing Zambia’s AI education strategy.
Hon. Syakalima commended Mulungushi University for its proactive approach in adopting AI and called on other institutions to follow suit. He encouraged collaborative research, staff exchanges, joint publications, and seminars to foster growth in AI education across the country.
“I am optimistic that this summit will lead to new partnerships, memoranda of understanding (MoUs), and a shared vision for AI-empowered higher education in Zambia,” said Hon. Syakalima.
As a result of the summit, eight learning institutions, including Chalimbana University, have signed MoUs with Mulungushi University to access AI-related courses with support from UNESCO.
