Minister Chikote Appeals to Traditional Leaders to Release Land for Solar Energy Projects
Zambia’s Minister of Energy, Honourable Makozo Chikote, has urged traditional leaders across the country to support government efforts in scaling up renewable energy by allocating land for solar power projects within their chiefdoms.
Speaking in Lusaka, Mr. Chikote said solar energy offers a timely and viable solution to Zambia’s ongoing power challenges. He emphasized that investing in solar infrastructure would help diversify the country’s energy mix, reduce power deficits, and spur economic growth in rural areas.
“I urge our esteemed traditional leaders to take advantage of this opportunity by availing land for solar projects. These investments will drive development in their chiefdoms, provide clean energy, and create much-needed jobs—especially for our youth,” said the Minister.
Mr. Chikote highlighted that solar energy is central to the government’s broader energy strategy and aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive to add 1,000 megawatts to the national grid by 2025.
He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to this goal, calling for collaborative action from all sectors, particularly traditional leaders who oversee vast tracts of land ideal for renewable energy investments.
He stressed the importance of private sector participation and noted that government continues to foster an enabling environment to attract investment in clean energy technologies.
“As part of this agenda, we continue to encourage private sector investment in renewable energy across all provinces. The participation of traditional leaders is key to ensuring that communities benefit directly from these developments,” Mr. Chikote said.
The Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s dedication to building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable energy future.
He called on all stakeholders to unite in reshaping Zambia’s energy landscape for generations to come.
