Moses Afopezi Wins 2024 Pachi Panda Challenge
Moses Afopezi of Cameroon has emerged as the overall winner of the 2024 Africa Pachi Panda Challenge, a prestigious initiative by MTN Group in partnership with WWF and FNB WesBank. The Challenge, held in Johannesburg, celebrated Africa’s next generation of eco-entrepreneurs committed to sustainable development.
Afopezi’s winning project, AgricFresh, is a tech-enabled platform that combats post-harvest losses by professionalizing farm management and improving market access. By integrating solar-powered cold storage systems, AgricFresh extends the shelf life of crops, supporting a more climate-resilient agricultural sector.
Finalists from Nigeria, Cameroon, Zambia, and South Africa competed, showcasing innovative solutions tailored to their local communities. Olabisi Rafatu Emmanuel from Nigeria took second place, while Jean Blaise Seka, also from Cameroon, secured third, both recognized for their creative and community-driven environmental initiatives.
Nompilo Morafo, MTN’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, praised the winners, saying: “The Africa Pachi Panda Challenge supports climate entrepreneurship that is practical, inclusive, and rooted in real local needs.”
WWF-Zambia’s Chief External Engagement Officer, Fungal Musana, called the challenge a “historic moment” and a “trailblazing youth-led initiative,” adding that the innovations presented have the power to drive lasting environmental change across Africa.
Kyle Durham, Head of Sustainability at FNB Commercial, added: “AgricFresh stands out as a shining example of the innovation, passion, and dedication that young eco-entrepreneurs bring to building a sustainable future.”
As the grand prize winner, Moses Afopezi will receive USD 5,000, along with mentorship and strategic support from MTN Group, WWF, and other partners to expand AgricFresh‘s reach to more communities, including conflict-affected regions in Cameroon.
The Africa Pachi Panda Challenge reflects MTN, WWF, and FNB WesBank’s commitment to empowering young innovators and embedding sustainability at the heart of Africa’s growth story.
