Zambia Sugar Launches Standalone Sexual Harassment Policy

Zambia Sugar has officially launched a standalone Sexual Harassment Policy aimed at strengthening workplace conduct and ensuring a safe environment for all its stakeholders.

The launch event took place Wednesday morning at the company’s Nakambala estate, aligning with global observance of Sexual Harassment Awareness Month.

Speaking at the event, Zambia Sugar Human Resource Director Sharon Lima said the new policy builds upon existing regulations under the company’s Anti-Harassment Policy but goes further to specifically address sexual misconduct.

“In our continued quest to make Zambia Sugar a safe and healthy working environment, we developed an independent policy to address sexual harassment comprehensively. No employee should be discriminated against or harassed based on their appearance or choice of attire,” Lima stated.

Director of Finance Hezron Musonda reaffirmed the company’s commitment to both psychological and physical safety. He said the policy was designed to harmonize diverse perspectives and reflect cultural values, ensuring respectful interactions across all levels of the company.

“This policy extends beyond employees to include contractors, consultants, and vendors. It covers all work environments, including online communication platforms such as WhatsApp and email,” Musonda noted.

Legal Counsel Harriet Katongo emphasized that sexual harassment is a serious offense under Zambian law, attracting both civil and criminal penalties. She urged all employees to familiarize themselves with the policy and uphold a culture of respect.

“Everyone deserves to feel comfortable and protected in their line of duty, without fear of harassment or discrimination,” Katongo said.
