President Hichilema Pays Tribute to Pope Francis, Calls for Unity and Compassion

President Hakainde Hichilema has paid heartfelt tribute to His Holiness Pope Francis, describing him as a global moral compass and champion of the poor, during a solemn Pontifical Holy Mass held at the Roman Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka.

Addressing the congregation as Guest of Honour, President Hichilema expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the Zambian Government and its people over the passing of the 88-year-old Pontiff, who died on April 21.

He emphasized that Zambia stands in solidarity with the global Catholic community and all who share in the loss of a beloved spiritual leader.

“His Holiness Pope Francis was a beacon of humility, a servant of God, and a tireless advocate for the marginalized,” President Hichilema said. “He reminded us that true faith is expressed through kindness, inclusion, and love.”

The President fondly recalled his 2022 meeting with Pope Francis in the Vatican, describing it as a “wonderful and inspiring encounter.” He noted that the late Pontiff’s values—centered on social justice, environmental stewardship, and reconciliation—deeply resonated with Zambia’s Christian identity and national values.

Highlighting the Pope’s global legacy, President Hichilema said the Holy Father built bridges across cultures, faiths, and nations, embodying leadership grounded in empathy and moral courage.

He urged Zambians to carry forward Pope Francis’ legacy by becoming “instruments of peace, voices for justice, and examples of mercy.”

In his remarks, Apostolic Nuncio to Zambia, His Excellency Archbishop Gian Luca Perici, expressed gratitude to President Hichilema for his presence and compassionate words during this time of mourning.

He also thanked the late Pope for appointing him as the Holy See’s representative to Zambia.
