Creative Digital Arts Key to Economic Growth – Mutati
Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, says creative digital arts hold vast potential to drive Zambia’s economic transformation through innovation, youth empowerment, and skills development.
In a speech read on his behalf by Permanent Secretary Brilliant Habeenzu at the launch of Evelyn Hone College as a Centre of Excellence in Creative Digital Arts, Mr. Mutati emphasized the Government’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for the arts sector.
“The music and arts industry has evolved tremendously due to technology. Today, audio and music technology are at the heart of production and performance,” said Mr. Mutati. “Education is central in shaping sustainable mindsets, and creative arts are a powerful vehicle in this journey.”
He commended Evelyn Hone College’s long-standing role in delivering quality arts training and praised the Irish Government for partnering with the institution through Ballyfermot College of Further Education.
The newly launched programme will initially focus on animation, creative music performance, and graphic design, aligning with the Government’s TEVET (Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training) policy which emphasizes hands-on skills and self-employment.
Mr. Mutati added that the initiative supports the broader Vision 2030 agenda, anchored in Zambia’s Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP), which prioritizes economic transformation, job creation, and human development.
TEVETA Director General, Cleophas Takaiza, urged Evelyn Hone College to maintain high standards in training to retain its Centre of Excellence status. “We want institutions that not only meet expectations but also lead by example in raising the quality of TEVET,” he said.
Irish Acting Head of Mission Brian Caden applauded the initiative, stating it opens doors for youth to pursue vibrant careers in creative arts.
College Principal Agrippa Hamweendo assured that the institution would maximize the use of new equipment and implement a Quality Assurance System to meet global training standards.
