Kashime Copper Mine in Mkushi Secures Approval After 15-Year Wait

After more than 15 years of anticipation, the Kashime Copper Mine in the Upper Lusemfwa area of Mkushi District has finally received the green light to begin mining operations, marking a significant milestone for Zambia’s mining landscape and broader economic ambitions.

The long-awaited project is being spearheaded by Zambian-owned Mimosa Resources, with financial backing and further exploration support from First Quantum Minerals (FQM). The development signals not only a boost in copper production but also an inspiring example of homegrown capacity leading major mining initiatives.

In September 2024, Mimosa Resources attracted an initial US$3 million investment from Australian Stock Exchange-listed Zeta Resources, aimed at completing feasibility studies and launching preparatory development at the Central Province site.

Speaking on the new development, Mkushi Mayor Melson Chilemu praised the milestone as a game-changer for the region and the country. “On behalf of the people of Mkushi and Zambia, I would like to thank His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema for hearing our cry.

This authorisation, secured after over 15 years of struggle, is a testament to our resilience. This project promises jobs, business opportunities, and renewed hope for our community,” he said.

Mayor Chilemu also extended gratitude to His Royal Highness Chief Chitina, Mimosa Resources, the Mkushi Mining Federation, Elias Chipimo Associates, and all stakeholders who supported the project’s approval journey.

Mimosa Resources Executive Chairman Jordan Soko hailed the Kashime project as a symbol of local capability in mining development. “This project shows that Zambians can own and lead mining operations. Our focus is on responsible development, community value creation, and supporting Zambia’s goal to ramp up copper production. This is a moment of shared progress and opportunity,” he said.

FQM Country Director Anthony Mukutuma echoed this sentiment, noting that the Kashime project is well-aligned with FQM’s commitment to growing Zambia’s mining sector. “It is encouraging to see a Zambian-owned company driving such a significant initiative. We’re proud to partner with Mimosa Resources as they take this bold step forward,” he said.

Beyond copper extraction, the mine’s development will include a processing complex, promising to unlock broader benefits for surrounding communities, Mkushi town, and the national economy. The project is expected to contribute meaningfully to Zambia’s target of producing 3 million tonnes of copper annually in the medium term.

Mimosa Resources is a fast-growing Zambian mining and metals development company founded by local professionals with extensive international and industry experience. The company aims to build a world-class team focused on project identification, development, financing, and operations — paving the way for future Zambian-led ventures and joint ventures in the mining space.
