Ethiopia Reaffirms Support for Newly Elected AU Officials at Executive Council Session

Ethiopia has reaffirmed its commitment to work closely with all newly elected African Union (AU) officials in advancing continental priorities and ensuring the effective implementation of AU mandates.

Speaking at the 24th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the AU and UNECA, Ambassador Hirut Zemene, expressed the country’s unwavering support for the leadership of the AU Commission and pledged collaboration with all elected officials throughout their term.

Representing Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos at the high-level meeting, Ambassador Hirut commended the Chairperson of the Executive Council and Minister of External Relations of Angola, H.E. Téte António, for his leadership and pledged Ethiopia’s full backing for the success of his tenure.

Ambassador Hirut emphasized the importance of unity and resilience as Africa faces pressing challenges such as climate change, geopolitical instability, conflicts, and humanitarian crises.

“The AU must remain agile and proactive in addressing these complex issues,” she stated, urging Member States to uphold the aspirations of Agenda 2063 and accelerate the implementation of key initiatives such as Silencing the Guns.

She further congratulated the newly elected Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, four Commissioners, and other AU officials, affirming Ethiopia’s readiness as the host country of the AU Headquarters to support their successful execution of duties.

The session, currently underway at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, aims to fill remaining vacancies within the AU Commission, including the election of two Commissioners, representatives to the Peace and Security Council, and officials to other specialized AU agencies.

Ambassador Hirut noted that the deliberations are critical to the AU’s long-term goals and called for the election of capable leaders who will propel the continental body toward greater integration, peace, and prosperity.
