Kenya Seeks Stronger Global Tourism Role at UN Ministerial Summit in Zambia

Kenya has reaffirmed its global tourism ambitions as it actively participates in the second UN Tourism Africa and Americas Ministerial Summit, taking place in Livingstone, Zambia, from April 8 to 10, 2025.

Tourism Cabinet Secretary (CS) Rebecca Miano is leading Kenya’s delegation at the summit, which brings together tourism ministers from UN Tourism Member States across Africa and the Americas. Industry experts and stakeholders from both continents are also in attendance, underscoring the significance of the event in shaping international tourism collaboration.

In a statement, CS Miano expressed Kenya’s commitment to leveraging the summit to deepen international partnerships, improve regional connectivity, and advocate for more efficient visa policies to accelerate tourism growth.

“Kenya’s presence at this summit reinforces our commitment to shaping the future of tourism, not just in Africa, but globally,” she said. “We are proud to serve as the second Vice-Chair of the UN Tourism Regional Commission for Africa and Chair of the Committee on Tourism and Competitiveness.”

Key objectives for Kenya at the summit include promoting tourism resilience in the face of climate change, health crises, and geopolitical instability. Miano also emphasized the country’s intention to create free economic zones tailored for tourism development and to prioritize youth empowerment through innovation in the sector.

Kenya is also pursuing a seat on the prestigious UN Tourism Executive Council for the 2025–2029 term, having been officially proposed by the UN Tourism Secretariat. The council is the second-highest decision-making organ in the organization after the General Assembly.

Miano expressed optimism about Kenya’s bid, noting, “We are honoured to have been nominated and look forward to the support of our fellow member states.”
