Defence Minister Urges Increased Intra-Africa Trade for Continental Growth

Zambia’s Minister of Defence, Mr. Ambrose Lufuma, has called for enhanced intra-Africa trade, emphasizing its crucial role in the continent’s economic development.

Speaking in Lusaka during a courtesy call by Chief of the Namibian Defence Force, Air Marshall Martin Kambulu Pinehas, Mr. Lufuma urged African nations to prioritize trade among themselves before seeking external markets.

He noted that increased trade between Zambia and Namibia would strengthen economic ties and mutual prosperity.

“We are members of SADC and COMESA, and we can only develop economically if we utilize these institutions to enhance trade,” Mr. Lufuma said.

He highlighted the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between Zambia and Namibia, stressing that the two nations share commonalities, including language, with the Lozi language spoken in Namibia’s Caprivi region.

The Minister also congratulated Namibia on its recent elections, which saw the inauguration of the country’s first female President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

Meanwhile, Air Marshall Pinehas acknowledged Zambia’s vital role in Namibia’s liberation struggle, expressing gratitude for the sacrifices made. He also praised the strong collaboration between the Zambia Defence Force and the Namibia Defence Force, citing Zambia’s support in organizing the state funeral of late President Hage Geingob in 2024.

“Our nations have a long-standing relationship, and I look forward to exploring more areas of cooperation,” said Air Marshall Pinehas, extending an invitation to Zambia Army Commander Lt. Gen. Geoffrey Zyeele to visit Namibia in 2026.
