SADC Commemorates Southern Africa Liberation Day: President Mnangagwa Calls for Regional Unity and Resilience
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) today marked Southern Africa Liberation Day, a solemn occasion to honor the region’s liberation heroes and heroines.
Speaking as the SADC Chairperson, Zimbabwean President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa emphasized the need to safeguard the hard-won independence and sovereignty of member states.
In his address, President Mnangagwa urged SADC citizens to remain vigilant against emerging threats, including sanctions and external interference. He reaffirmed the region’s solidarity with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, calling for its long-overdue independence.
He also highlighted the instability in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), stressing that peace is crucial for achieving the SADC Vision 2050. “The time to silence the guns and engage in meaningful dialogue is now,” he declared.
Climate change was another key concern, with President Mnangagwa noting that recurring droughts and floods threaten food security and economic stability. He called for investment in early warning systems, scientific innovations, and resilience-building measures.
Reaffirming SADC’s commitment to economic integration and industrialization, he urged unity, hard work, and self-reliance as the foundation for regional transformation.
The commemoration of Southern Africa Liberation Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom and the shared responsibility to protect and develop the region.
