Hichilema and Chapo Strengthen Zambia-Mozambique Ties with Landmark Bilateral Talks

President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia held bilateral talks today with President Daniel Chapo of Mozambique, seeking to strengthen the ties between the two nations.

The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the inauguration of Namibia’s fifth President, H.E. Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the country’s first female leader, marking a significant moment in Namibia’s political history.

The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in critical sectors such as agriculture, energy, tourism, infrastructure, and trade. President Chapo proposed a joint energy project aimed at addressing Zambia’s ongoing energy shortage, which has been worsened by the once-in-a-generation drought.

Both leaders expressed their commitment to tackling climate change and its impact on the region, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in achieving sustainable development.

“We have agreed to work together to consolidate and raise the economic performance of our countries for the benefit of our people,” President Hichilema stated, highlighting the mutual resolve to foster deeper economic ties between Zambia and Mozambique.

In addition to discussing economic cooperation, President Hichilema congratulated President Chapo on his recent electoral victory, offering his best wishes for peace and prosperity for Mozambique.

He also stressed the importance of regional stability for sustainable development, remarking, “Instability anywhere is a threat to progress everywhere.”

The meeting was part of a larger gathering of African Heads of State and Government attending the inauguration of Namibia’s new leadership, which coincided with the country’s 35th independence anniversary.
