Taza Mulenga Lungu Crowned 2025 Zee Woman in Mining

Taza Mulenga Lungu has been named the Zee Woman in Mining of the Year at the prestigious 3rd Zee Women’s Banking Awards gala, hosted by ZANACO Bank in Lusaka last week.

The event was graced by Her Honour the Vice President of Zambia, Mrs. W.K. Mutale Nalumango, alongside other distinguished guests, including Madam Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ms. Nelly B.K. Mutti, and Hon. Sylvia T. Masebo MP, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources. The awards honour women who are spearheading change and innovation across various industries.

The Zee Woman in Mining Award celebrates outstanding women who have made significant contributions to Zambia’s mining sector, including geology, exploration, and production. Taza Mulenga Lungu, currently serving as an Environmental Coordinator at KCM’s Nampundwe Mine, has been a pivotal figure in driving environmental and social excellence both locally and globally. With a career spanning over nine years in Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) in mining, she has continuously advocated for sustainable and responsible mining practices.

“At a professional level, my drive is to ensure mining is not just profitable but also environmentally sustainable and globally compliant,” said Lungu. “ESG is crucial in bridging the gap between mineral extraction and long-term environmental responsibility. In addition, it demonstrates the vital role of environmental governance in shaping a forward-thinking mining sector.”

Beyond her corporate role, Lungu has contributed to national and global environmental frameworks. Locally, she played a key role in the Development Partnership Framework: “Mining in Zambia, What Does Success Look Like.” Additionally, she authored “Exploring Decarbonisation Strategies in Mining Towns in Zambia,” which was presented at the OHSE Zambia Chamber of Mines conference last year.

On the global stage, she has significantly contributed to the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Medium-Term Strategies (2022-2025) in areas of international environmental law and industrial ecology. She is also an active volunteer with the UNEP Mineral Extractives and Environmental Policy Groups, where she has championed sustainable mining practices for over four years.

Expressing gratitude for the award, Lungu remarked, “I am truly humbled to receive this recognition. It serves as both an achievement and a reminder for all women to push barriers in their fields, enhance their skills, and believe that anything is possible with dedication and perseverance.”

As Zambia commemorates Women’s Month and Youth Day, Lungu encourages young people and women to embrace their potential: “You are more than capable. You are great. You are change-makers.”

Lungu holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Environmental Management from Bangor University, UK, alongside advanced certifications in renewable energy and green energy transitions from Imperial College, UK. She is also an International Women in Mining (IWIM) alumnus.

Congratulations to Taza Mulenga Lungu, Zambia’s 2025 Zee Woman in Mining.
