Young People’s Development Key to Intergenerational Leadership Integrity – Economic Analyst
As Zambia prepares to commemorate International Youth Day (IYD) on March 12, economic analyst Mr. Kelvin Chisanga has called on the central government to prioritize strategic youth development plans to foster intergenerational leadership integrity.
Quoting the Bemba proverb “Imiti ikula, epanga abantu” (Young trees grow to make a forest), Mr. Chisanga emphasized the need to invest in young people early, ensuring they develop responsibly with quality education and strong moral values.
“The young population in Zambia represents a significant demographic dividend. Stakeholders must develop policy models aimed at enhancing youth participation and improving their well-being,” he said.
He urged the Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Child Development to implement youth development programs from the ward to the national level, ensuring broad-based empowerment.
Mr. Chisanga acknowledged the Zambian government’s efforts, including free education, which increases employability prospects for young people. However, he stressed that policy operatives should undergo continuous review to align with emerging youth needs.
He further called for a dedicated youth-focused cabinet ministry, arguing that such a move would offer better leadership and drive substantial efforts in areas crucial to youth development.
“As we celebrate International Youth Day, young people should be intentional about skills development, particularly in business, investment, leadership, and governance while upholding traditional values,” he said.
Mr. Chisanga noted that youth energy and innovation are critical to Zambia’s economic growth, and it is vital to create a supportive ecosystem that allows them to contribute meaningfully.
“The United Nations recognizes the importance of youth empowerment, emphasizing cultural, legal, and economic rights. Zambia must follow suit by creating an enabling environment for young people to thrive,” he said.
He concluded by calling for a review of youth policies to ensure effective program implementation across Zambia, strengthening nation-building efforts through youth agencies and networks.
