Proflight Zambia Celebrates Culture with ‘Chitenge Friday’ Competition
Proflight Zambia has embraced the nation’s vibrant culture through its ‘Chitenge Friday’ competition, an initiative that rewarded four lucky winners with free return flight tickets to any of the airline’s regional destinations. The contest encouraged participants to celebrate the iconic chitenge fabric by dressing in their finest attire every Friday and sharing their photos on social media.
The ‘Chitenge Friday’ competition ran for six weeks, fostering a deeper cultural connection between Proflight Zambia and its customers. Participants, including Proflight Zambia staff, showcased various chitenge designs, highlighting its evolution from a simple wrapper to a versatile fashion statement.
Winner Mungule Sepa expressed her appreciation for the intricate patterns of the fabric, noting how it has transformed into a cherished symbol for all generations. “Years ago, the chitenge was seen as old-fashioned by some, but now there are modern designs that appeal to everyone. I love wearing chitenge because it connects me to my roots,” she said. Mungule, thrilled by her win, looks forward to visiting Cape Town with her prize.
Two-time competition winner Rose Nakazwe echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the chitenge’s significance as a representation of respect and heritage. “As women, wearing chitenge is a way of embracing our identity. This competition is a fantastic way to share our culture beyond Zambia’s borders,” she stated. Rose, who previously won a Proflight Zambia ticket to Johannesburg in 2023, hopes to revisit the South African city with her latest win.
For Daphine Luhanga, the contest was an opportunity to mark a special occasion. “My birthday is coming soon, and I wanted a ticket to Cape Town to visit my sister. I have been flying with Proflight Zambia since 2019 and love their flash fares,” she shared.
Similarly, winner Mwiche Chitembo was motivated by a heartfelt reason. “My little boys are fascinated by aircraft, but I couldn’t afford to buy three tickets. When I saw the contest, I thought, ‘Why not try to win one?’” she said. Mwiche hopes to use her ticket for a local flight to Livingstone, giving her children an opportunity to see Victoria Falls and experience Zambia’s rich wildlife.
The ‘Chitenge Friday’ competition underscores Proflight Zambia’s dedication to celebrating and preserving local traditions. As Zambia’s leading airline, Proflight not only connects people to destinations but also plays a role in strengthening cultural heritage. “Our culture must be passed on, or we risk losing it to global influences. It’s inspiring to see companies like Proflight embrace and promote our identity,” Mwiche added.
Proflight Zambia’s Director of Flight Operations, Captain Josias Walubita, reiterated the airline’s mission of cultural preservation. “Proflight Zambia is more than an airline; we are a bridge between people, places, and traditions. Initiatives like ‘Chitenge Friday’ reinforce our commitment to providing a travel experience that reflects the warmth and pride of Zambia,” he said.
The competition was born from Proflight Zambia’s existing tradition of staff wearing chitenge every Friday. By extending the practice to customers and stakeholders, the airline has reinforced its role in celebrating Zambian heritage while fostering a sense of unity through fashion and travel.
