ZESCO Signs 29 Power Purchase Agreements to Boost Zambia’s Energy Sector

ZESCO Limited has signed 29 Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) under the Presidential Solar Initiative, Micro-Generator Scheme, and Developer-Initiated IPPs.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, ZESCO Managing Director Eng. Justin Loongo described the agreements as a landmark achievement in Zambia’s electricity sector.

“The signing of these PPAs signifies a commitment to diversifying our electricity generation mix and attaining sustainable energy security,” Eng. Loongo said.

The initiative will add over 320MW of solar power to the national grid, with projects expected to start construction within the next few months. The Micro-Generator Scheme will contribute 270MWp, integrating small-scale solar projects into the grid, while the Presidential Solar Initiative will add 62MW through installations at government institutions.

“These projects will not only expand electricity supply but also create jobs, empower businesses, and strengthen grid stability,” Eng. Loongo added.

The agreements align with Zambia’s renewable energy vision, as reaffirmed by President Hakainde Hichilema during COP28 in Dubai. The government has introduced regulatory reforms to streamline approvals for small-scale energy projects, attracting private sector investment.

The first projects will break ground within months, with some expected to start producing power before the end of 2025. Eng. Loongo encouraged further investment in solar, wind, and hydroelectric projects to meet Zambia’s growing electricity needs.

“Today’s signing is a symbol of Zambia’s ambition in electricity diversity. We look forward to supporting more IPPs and ensuring universal access to electricity for all Zambians,” he concluded.
