President Hichilema Opens 14th African Air Forces Symposium in Lusaka
The 14th African Air Forces Symposium has officially opened in Zambia, with a strong call for African nations to support one another in times of crisis. The five-day event, taking place at Ciela Resort in Lusaka, has brought together Air Force Chiefs from 41 countries.
President Hakainde Hichilema, represented by Acting Defence Minister Honourable Douglas Syakalima, emphasized the importance of cooperation among African Air Forces in humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and search and rescue missions.
“By working together, we honor the vision of our forefathers who believed in a united Africa. We stand ready to support the Association of African Air Forces (AAAF) and ensure our Air Forces serve as both defenders of the skies and beacons of hope for our people,” said President Hichilema.
The President highlighted the impact of climate change on Africa, noting that Zambia has faced severe challenges, including food insecurity. He praised the Zambia Defence Force for its efforts in combating hunger, particularly commending Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander and AAAF Chairman, Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, for his leadership in addressing modern security threats, including climate-related challenges.
Lt. Gen. Nyoni reaffirmed the commitment of African Air Forces to not only secure the skies but also provide humanitarian aid in times of disaster.
He noted that under his leadership, significant progress has been made on initiatives such as the integration of women in peace and security efforts and the development of the Senior Enlisted Forum’s Non-Commissioned Handbook.
“Our Air Forces have the capability, expertise, and resources to assist nations in distress. The AAAF continues to strengthen its operational framework, despite the diversity of our member states,” Lt. Gen. Nyoni stated.
He further commended President Hichilema’s unwavering support for peace and security in the region, which has enabled Zambia to extend financial and humanitarian assistance to neighboring countries.
