ERB Warns Against Illegal LPG Trading Without a Licence
The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has issued a stern warning against individuals and businesses engaging in the illegal trade of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) without a valid licence.
The regulatory authority emphasized that such activities are a violation of the Energy Regulation Act No. 12 of 2019 and pose significant safety risks to traders, consumers, and communities.
The ERB has observed a concerning rise in unlicensed LPG trading, prompting the board to intensify inspections and enforcement measures. According to Sections 4 (a) and 10 (1) of the Energy Regulation Act, along with Statutory Instrument 41 of 2023, operating an energy facility without ERB authorization is a serious offence.
Offenders risk prosecution, which could result in fines of up to 500,000 penalty units, imprisonment of up to five years, or both, as outlined in Section 10 (2) of the Act.
ERB-licensed traders are required to adhere to stringent safety regulations, including employing trained personnel, utilizing approved equipment, and ensuring proper storage and handling of LPG. The board urged all individuals and businesses involved in the LPG trade to regularize their operations to avoid penalties.
“In collaboration with law enforcement agencies, the ERB has increased inspections of LPG facilities and kiosks. Those found operating unlawfully will face arrest and prosecution,” said Namukolo Asumpa, ERB’s Manager for Public Relations.
Consumers were advised to purchase LPG only from ERB-licensed traders to guarantee safety and product quality. Additionally, the public is encouraged to report suspected illegal LPG traders and safety concerns through ERB offices in Lusaka, Kitwe, Livingstone, and Kasama, or via the ERB toll-free line 8484 and official social media platforms.
The ERB reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and legality of LPG sales, emphasizing the need for compliance to protect consumers and promote responsible energy sector growth.
