JCTR Reports Slight Reduction in Cost of Basic Needs Basket for January 2025, Urges Gov’t Action on High Cost of Living
The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) has announced a slight decrease in the Basic Needs and Nutrition Basket (BNNB) for January 2025, which now stands at ZMW 10,800.56 for a family of five in Lusaka. This reflects a ZMW 32.90 reduction from December 2024, attributed to a drop in the prices of certain commodities, such as kapenta and vegetables.
Despite the decrease, JCTR notes that the overall cost of the BNNB remains high, reflecting persistent challenges with the cost of living in Zambia. While prices for kapenta decreased from ZMW 493.46 to ZMW 417.08 per kilogram, and vegetables reduced from ZMW 725.88 to ZMW 555.35 for 40kg, other commodities saw price increases.
For example, the price of onions rose from ZMW 17.11 to ZMW 33.56 per kilogram, and the cost of charcoal increased from ZMW 442.80 to ZMW 469.67 for a 90kg bag.
The organization also highlighted the ongoing economic difficulties faced by households in 2024, particularly due to food price inflation, drought-related disruptions, and the energy crisis. These issues have significantly impacted the affordability and accessibility of basic needs for many Zambians.
JCTR emphasized the urgency for the government to take action to address the high cost of living, particularly through measures such as strengthening agricultural value chains, quarterly reviews of fuel pump prices, and ensuring transparency in the management of local authority resources.
“The high cost of food and energy compromises the health, dignity, and livelihood of many individuals. Government action is crucial in improving access to basic needs and services,” said Ms. Lukwesa Musonda, Social & Economic Development Programme Officer at JCTR.
The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection’s recommendations include improving economic opportunities for smallholder farmers, offering relief to businesses through quarterly fuel price reviews, and encouraging resource accountability within local authorities.
The organization also called on Zambians to support those in need by reducing waste and sharing surplus resources.
As Zambia continues to battle economic challenges, JCTR urges urgent steps to ensure the realization of social and economic transformation for all, in line with the Eighth National Development Plan.
