Gov’t Urges Zambians to Join the Fight Against Cancer

Acting Health Minister Frank Tayali has called on Zambians to unite in the fight against cancer, emphasizing the need for collective action to combat the disease.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka to launch World Cancer Awareness Week, Mr. Tayali disclosed that Zambia records over 15,000 new cancer cases annually, with approximately 9,000 deaths attributed to the disease each year.

He stressed the urgency of enhanced awareness and early detection to reduce fatalities.

World Cancer Awareness Week precedes World Cancer Day, which will be commemorated on 4th February 2025 under the theme “United by Unique.” The event aims to raise awareness, educate the public, and encourage proactive measures in cancer prevention and treatment.

Mr. Tayali reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling cancer through the Ministry of Health’s initiatives, which include awareness campaigns, screening programs, and support networks for affected individuals and families.

“The government is actively working to strengthen cancer prevention and treatment strategies. Our focus remains on increasing accessibility to early screening services and providing necessary support to those battling the disease,” he stated.

He further urged citizens to participate in awareness activities and utilize available health services to detect and manage cancer at an early stage.
