Teachers Crucial in Climate Action – Syakalima
Education Minister Hon. Douglas Syakalima has emphasized the pivotal role of teachers in addressing climate change.
Speaking recently, Hon. Syakalima noted that Zambia’s 6 million learners represent a powerful platform for climate education and action, guided by their teachers.
The Minister, also Chirundu Member of Parliament, highlighted the “Growing Green Zambia” project, a national tree-planting initiative in schools.
He said the project is more than just planting trees; it’s a commitment to environmental preservation and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
“Teachers are uniquely positioned to make a lasting impact. By involving learners in planting and caring for trees, they are not only educating but also instilling responsibility towards protecting our environment,” Hon. Syakalima explained.
The Ministry of Education has also promoted production units in schools, which contribute to the school feeding program and generate income.
“Some schools have become self-sufficient, even foregoing government grants,” he revealed.
This aligns with broader government interventions to combat climate challenges, including President Hakainde Hichilema’s declaration of drought as a national disaster last year.
