Zambia Records Rise in Urban Electricity Access

Zambia has achieved a significant milestone in urban electricity access, with over 80% of urban households now connected to the power grid, up from 64%, according to the 2023 National Energy Access Baseline Survey.

Speaking at the report’s launch, Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary Peter Mumba attributed the progress to strategic measures implemented by the ministry and stakeholders.

He emphasized the need to reduce dependence on hydropower despite the success, advocating for diversification in energy sources.

The survey, conducted by the Ministry of Energy in collaboration with the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) and Zambia Statistics Agency, examined over 1.5 million households.

Zambia Statistics Agency Acting Statistician Sheila Mudenda highlighted the report’s significance, stating it offers critical data to shape policies, guide investments, and foster development strategies.
