SADC Leaders Break Ground on Standby Force Regional Logistics Depot

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairperson, H.E. Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa, President of Zimbabwe, and Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, President of Botswana, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the SADC Standby Force Regional Logistics Depot in Rasesa, Kgatleng District.

The facility is a key milestone in bolstering the operational readiness of the SADC Standby Force for peace support and humanitarian missions. H.E. Dr. Mnangagwa emphasized its alignment with the SADC Protocol of Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, noting its pivotal role in addressing complex threats to regional stability. 

Highlighting the significance of the facility, he referenced the SADC Missions in Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo as examples of collective security efforts.

President Duma Boko hailed Botswana’s 19-hectare land donation as a testament to the nation’s commitment to regional peace and integration. The SADC Executive Secretary, H.E. Elias Mpedi Magosi, announced that the depot will be fully operational by 2030, serving as a hub for logistics support, reducing delays, and enhancing mission efficiency.

Local leaders, including District Commissioner Mrs. Kolobetso Sejakgomo and MP Dr. Unity Dow, pledged support for the project, reflecting the region’s unified dedication to peace and development.

The event witnessed participation from SADC ministers, defence officials, traditional leaders, and local government representatives, emphasizing its regional significance.
