Banda, Chikotesha Win Big at 2024 CAF Awards, Kamanga Hails Duo
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has celebrated Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda and assistant referee Diana Chikotesha for their historic wins at the 2024 CAF Awards held in Marrakech, Morocco.
Banda, who plays for Orlando Pride, was crowned CAF Women’s Player of the Year, beating Morocco’s Sana Mssoudy and Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie. Chikotesha was recognized as the CAF Best Women Assistant Referee, marking a remarkable achievement in officiating.
FAZ President Andrew Kamanga praised the duo for their groundbreaking success, highlighting their roles as inspirational figures.
“Barbra Banda and Diana Chikotesha are trailblazers. Barbra has solidified her position as a global icon in women’s football, while Diana’s impeccable officiating on international stages, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Men’s AFCON final, is a testament to her excellence,” Kamanga said.
Banda, who also made the CAF/FIFPRO Africa XI 2024, is the first Zambian woman to claim the CAF accolade, joining legendary compatriots like Kalusha Bwalya, Clifford Mulenga, and Patson Daka in the prestigious club of CAF awardees.
Kamanga added, “Barbra’s journey inspires young Zambians to dream big. Her resilience and fortitude in football showcase what determination can achieve.”
The awards cap a successful year for Zambian football, with national teams securing qualifications for CAF competitions in 2025.
