Kapala Pushes for Fisheries and Livestock Development in Luapula Province
Zambia’s Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Peter Kapala, has called for the unlocking of Luapula Province’s fisheries and livestock potential, highlighting the region’s capacity to drive economic growth and job creation.
Speaking upon arrival at Mansa Airport, Engineer Kapala emphasized the untapped opportunities in districts such as Chifunabuli, Chipili, and Lunga.
He identified the Luongo Dam in Chipili as a prime location for aquaculture development, proposing fish cage farming to supply the emerging Luongo Mine and create employment for locals.
The Minister also highlighted the area’s suitability for livestock production due to its abundant pastures, water resources, proximity to the Congo market, and rising local demand.
He emphasized the Ministry’s vision to transform Luapula into a hub for fisheries and livestock production, aligned with the goals of the 8th National Development Plan.
Additionally, Kapala revealed that the Chishinga Breeding Center in Kawambwa, managed by the Zambia Correctional Service, has expanded its cattle herd from 400 to over 1,800. The center aims to supply the province with improved cattle breeds to boost livestock production.
Deputy Director of Livestock, Kabemba Mwambilwa, is leading a technical team to assess the potential in Chifunabuli, Lunga, Chipili, and Kawambwa. The team will explore strategies to convert these resources into tangible economic benefits for the province’s residents.
