Rwanda Secures $100 Million African Development Bank Loan to Revolutionize Kigali’s Urban Transport

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $100 million loan to transform Kigali’s urban transport system, addressing the city’s growing mobility challenges.

The “Kigali Urban Transport Improvement Project,” finalized on December 2 at the AfDB headquarters in Abidjan, aims to create an inclusive, efficient, and safe road network.

Kigali, home to 1.7 million residents and expected to double by 2050, struggles with traffic congestion, inadequate public transport integration, and a surge in motorbike taxis, often causing accidents.

The initiative targets three major junction bottlenecks, introducing dedicated bus lanes, non-motorized transport facilities, and disability-friendly pedestrian crossings.

Enhanced bus stops, well-lit transport hubs, and facilities for vulnerable groups such as nursing mothers and people with disabilities are also planned.

Aïssa Touré Sarr, AfDB’s Rwanda Country Manager, highlighted the project’s role in paving the way for a sustainable, low-carbon transport system, vital for Kigali’s future.
