Kwambula Programme: Empowering Zambian Youth Through Skills Development
The Kwambula Training Programme, an initiative by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) in partnership with the Government of Zambia and TEVETA, celebrated its second graduation ceremony at Trident College.
Since its inception in 2012, the programme has equipped over 500 youth with industry-relevant skills, contributing to the nation’s workforce transformation.
Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati, represented by Kondwani Mutelekesha, commended the programme’s role in tackling unemployment and fostering self-reliance.
“Kwambula is closing the skills gap and creating opportunities for economic empowerment,” said Mutati, urging graduates to embrace lifelong learning and become community builders.
The programme, based at Solwezi Trades Training Institute, offers training in areas such as instrumentation, mechanical fitting, and heavy equipment repair. Plans to introduce rigging and lifting operations aim to meet industry demands further.
Charlie Watts, Kwambula Training Manager, described the initiative as “igniting hope in the fight against illiteracy and poverty.” Graduates like Harriet Nyamasambu lauded the programme, citing its transformative impact on their lives and communities.
FQM’s Assistant General Manager Axel Kottgen reaffirmed the company’s commitment to fostering a skilled workforce, crucial for sustainable development.
