Govt Imposes Annual Fishing Ban to Protect Fish Stocks

The Zambian government has announced the imposition of its annual fishing ban on major rivers, lakes, and swamps, effective immediately from December 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025.

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Peter Kapala explained that the ban aims to protect fish stocks during the peak breeding season, allowing fish to breed and multiply in a controlled environment.

The ban covers several key water bodies, including the Zambezi River, Kafue River, Chambishi River, Lunga River, and Luapula River, as well as lakes such as Lake Mweru, Lake Mweru Wantipa, Lake Bangweulu, Lake Lusiwashi, Lake Itezhi Tezhi, and the Lukanga swamps.

Minister Kapala emphasized that all forms of fishing are prohibited within these regions during the specified period.

He also warned that his ministry will carry out regular patrols to ensure compliance. Any individuals found violating the ban, including fishers, traders, and transporters, will face legal action.
