CEJ Advocates for Sustainable Mining at UNECA Workshop in Ndola

The Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) participated in the “Green and Inclusive Approach to Mineral-Based Development and Industrialization” workshop in Ndola, Zambia, organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

During the event, Mr. Freeman Mubanga, CEJ’s Head of Research and Studies, emphasized the critical need for environmentally sustainable practices in Zambia’s mineral-based industrialization.

Speaking on a panel, Mr. Mubanga highlighted Zambia’s progress in copper beneficiation and the integration of mining with local industries.

He also addressed pressing challenges such as energy shortages, inconsistent policies, and a skilled labour deficit, which hinder mining sector growth.

To overcome these barriers, Mr. Mubanga called for improved infrastructure, accessible financing, and workforce development.

He urged the establishment of coherent policy frameworks and robust public-private partnerships to unlock the sector’s potential while safeguarding the environment.

CEJ reaffirmed its commitment to championing green and inclusive strategies for Zambia’s mining industry, aligning with the organization’s vision for sustainable national development.
