Kenya-Zambia Trade Expo Strengthens Bilateral Ties in Lusaka

The Kenya-Zambia Trade Expo has concluded in Lusaka, marking a significant step in bolstering trade and economic cooperation between the two nations.

Organized by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) and the Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI), the event followed discussions between the Heads of State at the 24th COMESA Summit in October.

The three-day expo was officially opened by Zambia’s Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry, Hon. Chipoka Mulenga, who was represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Ms. Lillian Bwalya.

The minister emphasized the strong trade partnership, citing 2022 trade figures where Zambia exported soybeans, corn, and raw sugar worth $51.7 million to Kenya, while Kenya’s exports to Zambia included margarine ($5.61 million), processed tobacco ($5.2 million), and raw plastic ($3.29 million).

ZACCI Vice President Mrs. Christabel N. Reinke highlighted intra-Africa trade as a cornerstone for economic growth. “The Kenya-Zambia Forum is a vital platform to forge enduring partnerships that drive our nations forward,” she stated.

The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including Zambian High Commissioner to Kenya, H.E. Alfred Musemuna, Kenyan High Commissioner to Zambia, H.E. Lilian Tomitom, and KNCCI President Dr. Erick Rutto.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was also signed between KNCCI, ZACCI, and the respective chambers of Nairobi and Lusaka, solidifying future collaboration.

Running from November 18-20, the expo showcased opportunities for trade expansion, with an emphasis on agricultural products, processed goods, and industrial materials.
